About subject courses
A subject course in the DLE is a standalone offering, not tied to any specific Programme or Module in the University's student record system (Unit-e). This independence is a key feature of these courses.
Example
A lab technician within a School may require students from multiple programmes or modules to complete preparatory work to use lab equipment safely.
Subject courses can be accessed by multiple modules, programmes, schools, or other groups of students. Enrolments are typically managed via voluntary self-enrolment, allowing learners to enrol and unenroll at any point.
Subject courses are created under the broad subject areas listed above and are viewable by everyone.
We DO NOT recommend using subject courses for summative assessment. These types of assessments are best suited to occur within module courses, which have a direct relationship and integration with the student record system (Unit-e), ensuring that university assessment regulations are adhered to.
Assessment, however, forms a fundamental function within the DLE. Whether this is to perform a quick test of knowledge or answer questions as part of an interactive learning object, sometimes there are opportunities for assessment where learners do not receive a grade. Therefore, using subject courses for formative assessment is recommended, allowing tutors and support staff to use Quiz, H5P and Assignment activities, among others.
Staff can request subject courses via the IT Service Desk.
Requests will need a valid and legitimate rationale for requiring a subject course. If needed, there will be an opportunity to speak to a DLE specialist to ensure a subject course is appropriate for your requirements.
